Week 4 of the 2025 MLB season delivered the drama we’ve been waiting for. An early story to keep an eye on is Shohei Ohtani’s early odds for NL MVP are looking increasingly vulnerable as Fernando Tatis Jr., Francisco Lindor and Kyle Tucker submitting their early bids. As the standings start to show who the better teams in baseball are let me get right into it.
National League
NL East
Atlanta Braves – The Braves are finally starting to settle in. Austin Riley, Marcel Ozuna, Matt Olson, & the rest of the crew who we expect to play well are… well… starting to play well. Winners of 5 of their last 6 against the Twins & Cardinals. Granted the competition over the last week hasn’t been great but wins all count the same & it was an important week for this team to find its footing.
Miami Marlins – The fish played everyday since our last volume of these weekly recaps & went 3-4. Not much to be said, pitching is good but 3-4 over 7 games is indicative of who they are. They’ll sell at the deadline again & rebuild for next year & nothing can be done to stop that.
New York Mets – The Mets are once again “Amazin’.” The Mets much like the Marlins played every day since our last recap… they never lost. The starting pitching, which many questioned before the season is untouchable, the bullpen is gritty and deep, & the lineup (which isn’t even at 100%) continues to do enough to win ballgames. Hitting in clutch situations, swiping bases in key points of the game, playing clean defense (even Soto!) this team has done it all over the last week. Pete Alonso is a man on a mission, but my goodness Francisco Lindor is impressive out of the 1 hole. He hit a walk off homer on Friday & followed up that performance with lead-off homers in back to back games, creating an early case for MVP. They opened up a 5 game lead on the Phillies & might be off to the races.
Philadelphia Phillies – For all the success of the Mets last week, it’s the opposite side of the coin for the Phillies. The sky isn’t falling, the team will still compete for a playoff spot, but it’s clear this team has some holes to address. The starting pitching isn’t what it once was (at least not yet it hasn’t been), but the bullpen & lineup are the real concerns. The big boppers aren’t hitting too well at the moment and there is not enough depth in the lineup to afford for that to happen. The bullpen is also a shell of itself, off-season acquisition Jordan Romano has been downright bad so far this season. This team is going to have to dig deep to overcome the small hole they’ve dug themselves in the first month of the season.
Washington Nationals – Nats after a tough week rebounded to beat the Rockies in Colorado & then beat the Orioles, their geographical rivalry, in the Beltway Series. Solid week for a team that will probably not end up competing for a playoff spot but will remain a tough team to play.
NL Central
Chicago Cubs – Go Cubs Go! The Cubs were a team last year who struggled in a frustrating way and missed the playoffs despite a late season resurgence. It was going to take a couple pieces to get them back atop the division, & boy oh boy did they find them. One of the pieces they found was with them the whole time, as 23 year old Pete-Crow Armstrong (fun fact: his real life mom is the mother of the main character in the baseball movie Little Big League) has made his presence felt early and often.
Elite defense in centerfield, was always a threat to steal a bag (or two, or three) but his bat has come alive now the way people have been waiting for. If the Cubs are on your television anytime soon, he is a reason to make you stop and watch the game. But he isn’t even the best surprise this season! The Cubs went out and traded for Kyle Tucker and dear lord was he everything they needed and more. Take Pete Crow-Armstrong, turn his speed attributes down a little bit, & his hitting attributes wayyyy up and you have Kyle Tucker. Hitting .314 & seeming to have a big night multiple times a week he is also an early front runner for MVP. All is good in North Chicago & I fully expect the Cubbies to run away with the division, they look scary good.
Cincinnati Reds – The Reds are a team who have had a lot of their roster in place despite being young, & just needed to get over that hump. With new legendary manager Terry Francona at the helm they have a chance to do that. This week was a step in the right direction, they went 4-2 highlighted by a 24-2 victory over the Orioles. Yes you read that correctly, 3 touchdowns and a field goal. Their next two series are against the Rockies and Cardinals and I expect them to have success against both.
Milwaukee Brewers – Last week we blamed the 3-3 record on their tough schedule. They played a home series against the A’s which they won before quickly flying out West to drop 2 of 3 to the Giants. Kind of a tough week again but from a scheduling standpoint, but we don’t wanna make any excuses for them. Right now they’re an average team who will have a chance to win every night, it’ll be up to them to see where their season goes from here.
Pittsburgh Pirates – I HATE the Pirates owner. Hate is a strong word, but it is appropriate here. I’ve been to Pittsburgh & attended Pirates games & really like the atmosphere. The fans are knowledgeable & passionate & they deserve so much more than what they’re getting. To sum up the week, it was Paul Skenes bobblehead day. The line to get into the stadium stretched over a bridge, over the Allegheny River, into the downtown area of the city. Skenes pitched 7 strong innings, the Pirates lost 3-0.
St. Louis Cardinals – The Cardinals have the 2nd best batting average in baseball. Which is why it confuses me to alert you that right now they’re kinda stink. Swept by the Mets in 4 games & losing 2 of 3 to the Braves, I understand that both teams have talent but the Cards are trending in the wrong direction. Their pitching is currently 8th worst in the league judging by ERA & their home run numbers aren’t great. They can steal some bases so if they can pitch a little better they don’t have to stink. But for this week they do.
NL West
Arizona Diamondbacks – Lost 2 of 3 to the Cubs (which if you made it thru my Cubs discourse shouldn’t make the DBacks feel too bad) & have split 2 with the Rays entering their series finale today. Luckily for them the entire NL West slowed from their blazing pace this week so they’re still 2.5 games behind the leader. The series against the Braves & Mets next week will either solidify their spot in their division or put them in a not-so-deep hole in the division as we exit April.
Colorado Rockies – *takes deep breath* They are really bad.
Los Angeles Dodgers – I’m going to make a statement here that is probably going to catch me some heat, but looking at this league in a week to week lens allows me to get a little crazy with my takes. I’m a little underwhelmed by the Dodgers FOR NOW. Take last night’s lineup: Ohtani, Betts, Teoscar, Freddie (elite top 4), Edman, Pages, Conforto, Rojas, Barnes? It’s not the scariest lineup you’ll see, & yes I know adding Will Smith & Kike would add a more spark but it was the Wednesday MLB Network game of the week. Also the talk before the season was about how good & deep their pitching is… but they’re throwing bullpen games?? Again, they’re the Dodgers, they’re gonna be fine & I’ll be scared of them in the playoffs, but they’re in a small rough patch right now.
San Diego Padres – This Easter Sunday I got home and was stuffed & exhausted. Got home and didn’t wanna do anything except watch Padres vs Astros, & what’d I see? Fernando Tatis is what I saw. I watched him make an athletic sliding grab in RF & nearly throw a runner out at first from a seated position on the same play. I then watched him hit an absolute tank of a game winning homer later in the game. He’s the type of player (much like Lindor & Tucker mentioned earlier) who is both an MVP candidate and can’t miss baseball. It actually wasn’t the best week for the Pads who went 2-4 but the theme of this week is must watch guys & Tatis is at the top of the list right now. Excited to see them face off against the Giants & see the NL West start to take shape.
San Francisco Giants – The Giants lost a series against the Angels in Anaheim to start the week, reminiscent of the 2002 World Series, before taking the first 2 of 3 in their 4 game set with the Brew Crew. Logan Webb out-dueled Freddie Peralta in a star studded pitching matchup last night which is always cool to see. Not too much to say about the Giants who aren’t a “sexy” team per se, but if they knock off the Padres this week I’ll dive deeper into their team next week because they have been very competitive so far this year.

American League
AL East
Baltimore Orioles – 2-2 over the last week with a rainout. At 7-10 it’s been a disappointing start for them. But luckily no team has jumped out into a commanding lead of the division (although the Yanks look poised to as usual). Might be a good time for Baltimore to wake up before they put themselves in an early hole.
Boston Red Sox – The theme of the AL East is me not really being able to get a read on teams. They’re 3rd in the league in hits, 3rd in stolen bases, & their team ERA is bad but not the worst. It’s their fielding that’s been very weak, multiple guys near the top of the league in errors at their respective positions. Losing series to the White Sox? Losing games 16-1? But winning a series and sitting at 10-10 in the process? Who are the Boston Red Sox?
New York Yankees – There is a lot that can be said about guys like Dominguez & Grisham who are valiantly playing their role for this team. But my goodness I’d be doing a disservice if I didn’t mention Aaron Judge. The generational talent continues to carry the Yanks during the regular season as we’ve become accustomed to. Batting .409 & 2nd in homers, the king of New York continues to do king things. Once they replace some of their awful pitching they should once again be a legitimate contender in the AL.
Tampa Bay Rays – 3-4 since our last update, this is another team I can’t figure out. I’ll just be blunt about it though, I think that’s we will figure them out sooner than later as I don’t think they’ll have the talent to keep up with the rest of the thoroughbreds in this division.
Toronto Blue Jays – The Blue Jays are equally as confusing to me as the Red Sox. The interesting thing is they aren’t winning one losing one: they look dominant in one full series, & lost in the next. History would lead me to believe they will go the way of the Rays & fade away as the season goes on, but something inside of me says maybe we should pay them a little more attention until they give us a reason not to. Vlad finally hit his first homer after a long long drought, if he can start hitting for power (because his average never wavered) they could become a force.
NL Central
Chicago White Sox – They still look terrible, but I’m not gonna beat a dead horse. On a positive note they actually beat the Red Sox in their 3 game series this week so hats off to them! Going to try to go easy on the fellas from the South Side this year as I feel for them & their fans.
Cleveland Guardians – 4-2 since last update. A step in the right direction. Surprisingly, after having one of the best bullpens in the league in 2024, their bullpen has looked like a shell of itself, including their stud closer Emmanuel Clase. Early season woes? Reason for legitimately concern? Too early to tell. But if the bullpen doesn’t figure it out the rest of the team isn’t good enough to carry the weight.
Detroit Tigers – 3-3 with a series win over Twinkies & a series loss to the Brewers Crew. Not a ton to report this week, looking forward to their 7 games in 7 days against the Royals and the surging Padres. Might tell us more about this team.
Kansas City Royals – Someone might want to let them know the goal is to hit the baseball and score runs. They don’t seem to know.
Minnesota Twins – 3-3 week against Mets & Tigers. Didn’t look particularly good in either series but the Wins & Losses columns do not discriminate. This team battling the injury bug right now needs to keep relying on Joe Ryan & Bailey Ober, both of whom looked really good against the Mets.
NL West
Houston Astros – America’s favorite team is still playing average baseball out the gate. They lead the league in quality starts & are 2nd in the league in strikeouts, but remain 8-10 and in 4th place as of today. Nobody in this division (or any other division) has looked too much better than the rest so they’ll luckily have time to find their footing.
Los Angeles Angels – Here comes the correction 🙁 After a decent start over the first two weeks the Angels have lost two series in a row to division rivals. Can never overreact to one week of baseball at a time, but it felt like this regression was going to come eventually. Hoping they bounce back & prove they are legit. Their 30 homers is good for 3rd most in the bigs through 3 weeks of play.
Oakland Athletics – The A’s unfortunately look like the worst team in this division. Sure they took 2 from the White Sox (who hasn’t) but they were sloppy in the 3 game set against my Mets which they lost. To compound things, their minor league stadium is an embarrassment to the sport. The small crowds gathering on the grass hills in the outfield is a cool touch, but there is no place for players to get a stretch leading to workouts in the middle of the dugout, & they needed to cart an injured player out of the stadium through the outfield & the cart broke down halfway there. Maybe foreshadowing for the remainder of the season. The one shining spot is currently Tyler Sonderstrom, who leads the league in homers out of nowhere.
Seattle Mariners – Big step in the right direction for these guys taking 4 of 5 this past week. They even managed to put up a crooked number against the Rangers which you’ll rarely see from the M’s. Despite their generally poor hitting, Big Dumper (yes, his real nickname) Cal Raleigh is tied with Aaron Judge for 2nd most home-runs in the league.
Texas Rangers – Naturally as soon as I said these guys would be on top of the division for a while the Rangers were swept by a struggling Mariners team. Luckily they beat the interim division leading Angels twice to reclaim the lead before I had to eat my words completely. Surprisingly they share the lowest run differential in the division with the A’s.
