The Steelers’ playoff path over the course of the last month has been a nightmare. A promising 10-3 start crumbled into a four-game losing streak that was very painful on the eyes. The team has looked lost, confused, and nothing like the squad that fans saw progressing into a fun watch over the course of the first 13 weeks.
The dreams of hosting a playoff game as AFC North champs evaporated even though the cold weather is here. Instead, the Steelers limped into Baltimore as major underdogs against a Ravens team that embarrassed them just weeks ago. The offense can’t score, the defense keeps breaking down, and turnovers plague them at the worst moments. Mike Tomlin’s squad picked the absolute worst time to play their worst football of the season.
So true. 🤣 #Steelers #NFL pic.twitter.com/ixFgL4U2N1

they were the worst offense in the league over the final month of the season if you exclude the browns who were actively tanking with DTR. pic.twitter.com/ylrhf8Ez7B

Four Straight Losses Tell The Story
The Steelers’ collapse should be studied and documented. A team sitting pretty at 10-3 suddenly forgot how to play football. I don’t think anybody saw this kind of meltdown coming, especially from a Mike Tomlin squad. Fans knew the schedule was a gauntlet and expectations were low but, oh my goodness. Most fans expected at least one win despite the difficult schedule! That is all they had to do to wrap up the division. Win one game. Instead, fans are discussing how they made NFL history for all the wrong reasons. They are just the third team ever limping into playoffs on a four-game losing streak. The offense looked completely lost, failing to crack more than 17 points in any of these games.
The brutal stretch included:
- Eagles bullying the secondary in a 27-13 loss
- Ravens running them out of the building, 34-17
- Chiefs stealing Christmas with their 29-10 victory
- Bengals squad out a 19-17 forcing the Steelers to go to Baltimore instead of Houston
The AFC North Dream Dies
The Steelers had the AFC North in their grasp with a two-game lead heading into Week 15. Then the wheels came off in worrisome fashion. You’d have to go back decades to find a Steelers collapse this bad. The team that controlled their destiny now hasn’t led a single game since beating Cleveland on December 8. The swagger is gone, replaced by a team searching for answers. Now they’re stuck with a wildcard spot, trying to win their first playoff game since 2016. The path ahead looks unrealistic and impossible. Even if they get their act together and were to beat their rivals, their next destination would most likely be Buffalo.Â
Everything Falls Apart At Once
The numbers paint an ugly picture – getting outscored 109-57 over their last fours games tells you everything about this collapse was not competitive. That ball-control offense that worked so well early? Gone without a trace. They could not sustain drives, were giving up bad sacks and taking turns screwing everything up. When Russell Wilson would throw a perfect pass, it was dropped. When guys were wide open, the pressure forced Russ to make bad decisions whether it was taking sacks or turning the ball over. Now, George Pickens is getting clowned on social media after his circus of drops, managing just one catch for zero yards in the season finale. The offense that seemed like it was gaining their rhythm since Russell Wilson took the helm fell flat on their face when the schedule got tough.
The Offense’s Set Back
Back were the days where watching the offense feels like it was run by Matt Canada. The numbers tell an ugly story, but the eye test looks even worse heading into playoff football. Their offensive line got dominated again throughout the stretch of the four game losing streak. The tackle positions are certified traffic cones letting star pass rushers have career days. Pair that with the inability to sustain drives, and it is easy to see why they only accumulated 193 yards of offense against the Bengals. Having the ball for only 22 minutes against Cincinnati ain’t gonna cut it. The best way to contain any good quarterback from hurting your defense is keeping them off the field.Â

-Inadequate pass protection
-QB who can't operate under pressure
-Poor route design/execution

How bad was the Steelers offense on Saturday?
— John Breech (@johnbreech) January 5, 2025
• It was the first time in 10 years that the Bengals held an opponent under 200 yards
• First time SINCE 1988 that the Bengals held the Steelers under 200 yardspic.twitter.com/plJu4SXWMs
The Defense is Beat Down
While the offense cannot sustain drives, the defense suffers. Although, their contributions over the last month are nothing to brag about. Even though they held the Bengals to the least amount of points they have scored since October, losing covers up those moral victories. They are meaningless. Omitting that performance, the dominant defense that carried the team through early season struggles? Nowhere to be found last time the team was in Baltimore. It was almost as if the coaching staff told the team that stopping the run was optional as they allowed 220 yards on the ground. Despicable for many fans.Â
When the Ravens didn’t gash them in the run game, the Eagles were cooking them in the air with AJ Brown. Then their Christmas was soiled when Mahomes carved them up hitting 29 of 38 passes for 320 yards. The defensive lowlights kept piling up as they had zero sacks against Kansas City while letting them walk right down the field for 13 points on their first two drives. Even at halftime, after giving themselves a chance, they gave up 17 points on three straight possessions after halftime. These elite teams all brought their best while the Steelers remained a shell of themselves.Â
The Playoff Picture Ain’t Pretty
The Steelers head to Baltimore Saturday night with playoff dreams and a whole lot of questions. The Week 16 beatdown still stings – but it is hard to beat a team two times in a row. The playoff history favors the Steelers at 3-1, but this Ravens team is playing great football at the right time. If Derrick Henry gets loose again in the run game, the Steelers will get run out of the building once again.Â
The Steelers’ season reads like a “how not to” guide for playoff teams. From AFC North favorites to barely sneaking in – this collapse stings for everyone. Four straight brutal losses, an offense that forgot how to score, and a defense that can’t save the day like earlier in the season. But now every team is 0-0, even though nobody is confident for Wild Card weekend in Pittsburgh. For the believers, playoff football brings its own magic. Anything can happen when that whistle blows, especially in a rivalry game. Unless the Steelers find answers quick, this Saturday night in Baltimore will be the last time we see the Steelers until September with more questions than answers. Sometimes the truth hurts, but that’s just where the Steelers stand at the end of the regular season.
