MLB Week 7

MLB Season Winners and Losers Through 7 Weeks

National League

NL East

Atlanta Braves

Despite an odd series of blown opportunities against the Pirates, the Braves went 3-2 in the short week & managed to bring their record back to .500. For a team who started 0-7 to be back in the picture this quickly before they even get their star player back from injury is telling. The Braves have held the opposing team to 3 runs or less in all 5 of their games played this week. Their staff is highlighted by young stud Spencer Schwellenbach who is tied for the league lead in quality starts.

Miami Marlins

Another forgettable week for the Marlins who have lost both games to the Cubs & lost their series to the White Sox. There is no shame in losing to the Cubs, but when both teams in Chicago beat up on you it’s time to do something serious soul searching as a team.

New York Mets

The Mets had a signature series win against the Cubs in which they took the Mother’s Day rubber game thanks to a (you guessed it) Francisco Lindor go-ahead homer in the 8th inning. Since then they have taken the first two from the reeling Pirates (which included a win over Paul Skenes) & they look to complete the sweep today.

Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies ended their series against the Rays with an extra innings win before taking 2 of 3 from the Guardians. Kyle Schwarber led the way with a 2 homer game on Mothers Day which proved to be the difference in that game. They’ve lost one game to the red hot Cardinals & have a series deciding double-header today following a rain out.

Washington Nationals

Losers of 7 straight. Capitals on the brink of elimination. The new football stadium they’re getting is the only thing for Washington D.C to be excited about at the moment.

NL Central

Chicago Cubs

The Cubs dropped the series of the week to the Mets before bounce back wins against the Marlins. On a rather slow week for the Cubbies, the debut of young stud rookie pitcher Cade Horton is something fans have to look forward to moving forward.

Cincinnati Reds

The Reds lineup is pretty putrid assuming the box scores are telling the truth. Shutout a couple times again against the Astros before putting up one run against the lowly White Sox. This team is trending down right now, especially with Hunter Greene on the shelf.

Milwaukee Brewers

FINALLY. The Brewers avoid playing .500 baseball for the 5th straight week. Only thing is they went 1-4 & looked pretty terrible in the process. I’m just glad they started trending in any direction though. We’ll see if they can bounce back and try to reclaim the 2nd spot in the division which they’ve currently lost.

Pittsburgh Pirates

The Rockies appear to be generationally bad. Just last year the White Sox broke the all time loss record, & the Rockies are somehow on pace to shatter that record. That’s why it should be so alarming when I inform you that the Pirates have actually scored less runs than the Rockies, the least in the MLB. The sad thing is I watched them live against the Mets this week & their abysmal lineup & shaky bullpen blew two quality starts from Skenes & Mitch Keller. If something doesn’t change soon, Skenes is going to end up in another uniform faster than the folks of Pittsburgh would like to see.

St. Louis Cardinals

We’ve been testing to see if the Cardinals were home team merchants. They must have felt personally disrespected by this notion as they won all 4 away games they’ve played this week & are on a 9 game win streak. Don’t be so surprised though, they’re 6th in the MLB in batting average & 3rd in on-base percentage. The W-L columns are finally starting to reflect the way they’ve been playing so far this year.

NL West

Arizona Diamondbacks

The Diamondbacks have alternated wins & losses in every game over their last 10. No win streaks, no losing streaks, just some good ole rip your hair out of your head mediocrity.

Colorado Rockies

I don’t love beating up on teams or fan bases. I love baseball & I want all fans to be able to enjoy the game. But I’d be doing a disservice if i didn’t mention how bad this Rockies team continues to play. Pitcher’s crying in press conferences. They gave up THIRTY FOUR (34) runs in two games. TWO GAMES. Of course naturally they gave up only two runs the following night when I had the over but we’ll save that discourse for another blog. The Rockies are making a serious push to be the worst team of all time.

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers came into the season with incredible depth & they have exercised what appears to be the full extent of that depth. Roki Sasaki has now hit the IL & he is the latest in the long line of many Dodgers players to do so. They went 2-3 this week & with the amount of injury they’ve had to deal with I don’t think anyone will judge them for it.

San Diego Padres

The Padres went 3-2 this week against the Rockies & Angels. As previously mentioned they beat the Rockies about as badly as I’ve seen a team get beat despite not completing the sweep. They could have been 4-1 had their closer Robert Suarez not had a complete meltdown against the Angels in the 9th. Regardless, Tatis followed up that disaster with a walk off bomb & the Padres continue to keep pace with their rivals in the division.

San Francisco Giants

If you’ve followed my blogs since week 1 I’ve given the Giants the praise they’ve deserved up to this point in the season. But you’d also recognize something was a little bit off about my praise to them, it didn’t feel genuine. That’s because the truth is, it is not genuine. I am not a believer in the Giants & what better week to bring it than a week where they went 1-4. My prediction is they’ll slide back behind the Diamondbacks once the snakes find their footing.

American League

AL East

Baltimore Orioles

The Orioles continue to disappoint as they went 2-2 on their short week. Took a series in Anaheim before dropping the first of a doubleheader to the Twins. We will have to wait another week before we see if they can make up ground in the division.

Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox won a series against the Royals, which considering the Royals recent performance, is a solid series win. But in typical 2025 Red Sox fashion they took that momentum, crumbled it up, & tossed it in the trash as they have since lost 14-2 to the Tigers and followed it up by giving up a 3-run walk off homer to Javy Baez in the 9th inning of a game they were leading. Painful mediocrity & inconsistency continues to haunt this Red Sox team.

Tampa Bay Rays

The Rays actually took 3 of their 4 games in this short week. Junior Caminiero delivered one of the most electric moments of the season with his go-ahead (& eventually game winning) grand slam to beat the Blue Jays. We’ll see if they can build off this momentum moving forward.

Toronto Blue Jays

I swear whenever I think I have a team figured out they find a way to prove me wrong. The Blue Jays were the millionth example of that as their bats (which last week I said were non-existent) are averaging 7.5 runs over their last four games. They also took 3 of their 4 games played this week now that their bats appear to be waking up.

New York Yankees

Yanks went 3-2 in the short week, but they really gave the business to the A’s. They averaged just under TEN (10) runs per game in their road series against the A’s (one of those games they lost). They kept the hot bats rolling into Seattle with another 11 run game before finally getting stifled by stud pitcher Bryan Woo in a 2-1 loss. On the opposite side of the coin, they suffered one of the most brutal injuries you’ll see on a baseball field when they lost Oswaldo Peraza for the season. His ankle was clearly broken on a play at the plate late in their 11-5 win against the Mariners. Hope he recovers quickly.

AL Central

Detroit Tigers

The Tigers were surprisingly beat up a bit in their series against the Rangers dropping 2 of 3, before rebounding nicely and taking the first two games of the series against the Red Sox. The Tigers might have the feel good story of the season in Javier Baez. The fan favorite was a former superstar, but it looked like his career might be ending after a couple downright embarrassing seasons. Not sure what’s gotten into him but he has returned to the best version of himself & is trending towards an appearance in July’s all-star game. His walk off homer to beat the Red Sox is must watch.

Chicago White Sox

The White Sox have GOD on their side. The new Pope is from Chicago & was a lifelong White Sox fan, which is the only explanation to them winning 3 of their 4 games played this week. Let’s see if the man upstairs can keep them trending in this direction.

Cleveland Guardians

Guardians dropped a series to the surging Phillies over the weekend before rebounding well in their weekday series against the Brewers. On the back of their speedy all-star Steven Kwan (top 5 in WAR as of today) the Guardians have kept themselves in position to pester the Tigers at the top of the division as the season rolls on.

Kansas City Royals

The red hot Royals went back to their previous royal blue ways as they finally cooled off a bit with a 2-3 week against the Red Sox & Astros. Their bats continue to disappoint as they managed to score more than 2 runs only once this week.

Minnesota Twins

The Twins are white hot right now. 10 wins in a row, hottest team in baseball. Swept the Giants & took both games in a doubleheader against the Orioles. They’re doing it in different ways every day too, slugfests, pitchers duels, they just seem to find a new way to win every night over the last couple weeks. They look to continue their streak against the Brewers & Guardians next week.

AL West

Athletics

We mentioned last week that the back to back Yankees & Dodgers series could prove to much to handle for this A’s team. Their pitching was wildly exposed in the Yankees series as they dropped 2 of 3 & are lucky they didn’t get swept. However, they absolutely poured it on in their win against the Dodgers in game 1 of that series. 2-2 short week against those two teams, you’ll take that every time.

Houston Astros

The Stros went 3-2 this week as they continue to stalk an AL West division that is very much up for grabs. They’ve been the gold standard of the division for years now & despite their mediocre play they’re leaving themselves in position to once again challenge for the division’s top spot in the dog days of summer.

Los Angeles Angels

The Angels aren’t very good. It becomes more apparent by the game. They did however have one of the best moments of the week as Taylor Ward broke open their game with the Padres in the 9th inning with a majestic home run. A feel good moment for the struggling squad.

Seattle Mariners

Seattle went 1-4 this week as they did their best to give back the division they just conquered. Wouldn’t exactly call it a competitive week for them either as all their losses were by 3 or more runs. Their pitching is really banged up with as Bryce Miller joined his rotation pals Logan Gilbert & George Kirby on the IL. This team is not built to out-slug teams so I could see whatever time period they have to spend with their big dogs on the IL being a rough patch for this team.

Texas Rangers

I speak & the opposite happens. I don’t make the rules I just follow them. This team was labeled a dumpster fire a week ago & surely they rattled off wins 4 of 5 games played this week. The first 2 of those wins were against a very good Tigers team too. They’ll look to sweep the pathetic Rockies tonight and keep the momentum going moving forward.
