Steelers Deadline Additions Propel Team to Win Over Commanders

Omar Khan didn’t have to wait long for the Steelers trade deadline moves to pay dividends. The fans got to see the pieces acquired right before the deadline contribute in their thrilling 28-27 win over the Washington Commanders. The Steelers’ front office showed excellent judgment by adding Mike Williams and Preston Smith, who made clutch and timely plays when needed. For only a 5th and a 7th round pick out the door, the roster got a final tweak for the 2024 season.

Mike Williams’ Game-Winning Touchdown

The Steelers made a deadline deal to acquire Mike Williams from the New York Jets for a 2025 fifth-round pick. The veteran receiver added strong credentials to Pittsburgh’s offense. The Jets signed Williams to a one-year, $10 million contract before his trade to the Steelers. Pittsburgh’s need for a reliable target among other receivers like George Pickens made Williams a perfect fit. The Steelers trailed by six points with 2:22 left on the clock. They faced a critical third-and-9 from the Commanders’ 32-yard line. Mike Tomlin made his boldest move of the game and turned to his newest player. After thinking he was inactive, it took Calvin Austin getting a little banged up to see him.

Williams’ physical presence and proven track record make him a reliable red-zone target for the Steelers. The front office’s decision to add another veteran pass-catcher for their playoff push has clearly paid off. They pursued Williams in the 2024 offseason before he ultimately signed with the Jets. It scratches fans heads that the Jets offense couldn’t get him the ball. The Steelers on the other hand wasted no time. If Mike Williams is able to establish himself as a steady target in Pittsburgh, it will only benefit George Pickens on the other side. It forces the coverage to stay honest if they view Williams as an actual deep threat.

Preston Smith’s Defensive Contribution

Seeking pass rushing depth, the former Packer joined the Steelers from Green Bay. With the injury of Nick Herbig the group was one injury away from distress. The experienced linebacker asked for the trade to find a defensive system that fits his abilities better. He may have found his next home in Pittsburgh for the short term.

Trade acquisition from Green Bay

Pittsburgh acquired Smith for a bargain – just a seventh-round pick in next year’s draft. His stellar NFL career boasts 68.5 sacks and over 400 tackles since 2015. Smith adapted should seamlessly fit into the 3-4 defense. Smith made his presence felt right from the start. His limited 23 snaps yielded a sack and one quarterback hit. He also added two tackles for loss and three solo tackles. His defining moment came at the time he blew up a Commanders’ trick play in the fourth quarter. This forced them out of field goal range. His exceptional run defense stands out where at times the defense has been exposed.

increased role due to injuries

Smith’s acquisition came at the perfect time after Alex Highsmith’s injury concerns. His adaptability and veteran presence make Pittsburgh’s pass-rushing depth stronger as they head into important matchups. Highsmith’s day came to an early end in a crucial fourth-quarter defensive series. The star linebacker hurt his ankle while chasing Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels. The medical team helped him leave the field since he couldn’t put any weight on his injured ankle. Now he is expected to miss 3-4 weeks.

Preparing for upcoming Ravens game

The Steelers’ medical team races to assess these injuries quickly. Mike Tomlin’s defensive strategy needs major adjustments for the Ravens matchup. Preston Smith’s presence becomes more valuable with Highsmith’s status is doubtful. These injuries make this fierce divisional rivalry even more challenging. With the Steelers now sitting at 7-2, their chance to beat the Ravens allows them some breathing room in the AFC North. If the Chiefs beat the Bills, they’ll find themselves in the 2 seed with the home playoff game in the driver seat.

Fight For The AFC North

The Steelers showed their brilliance in recent trade deadline moves during the Commanders game. Mike Williams scored a spectacular touchdown catch while Preston Smith arrival came at the right time. These smart additions highlight how well the front office spots and aids some of the Steelers first half troubles.

Defensive injuries have created some tough challenges for the team. The Ravens matchup will only put the team’s depth to the test. Now that the Steelers have strengthened their roster they seemed to trip themselves the best they could for the division games ahead. Through 10 weeks, Pittsburgh’s playoff hopes look better than many expected.
