Steelers Use Run Game To Get Back on Track Against Raiders

Things are back on track for the Steelers after a commanding 32-13 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. The game highlighted several key aspects of the Steelers’ performance. Their offense found the running game, and the passing attack (which may not be threatening) was timely. On defense, the team applied relentless pressure, forcing turnovers and stifling the Raiders’ offense. As the Steelers look ahead to two home games before their bye week, this victory serves as a springboard for continued success.

30+ Points on the Board

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ offense found its rhythm against the Las Vegas Raiders, showcasing a balanced attack that kept the opposing defense on its heels. The team’s offensive resurgence was refreshing in their highest-scoring game since December 2023. Najee Harris had his season breakout game, rushing for 106 yards and a touchdown. This marked Harris’ first 100-yard game of the season, reminiscent of his strong finish to the previous year. His explosive 36-yard touchdown run in the third quarter was what really put the game out of reach.

Fields’ Key 4th Down Touchdown

Quarterback Justin Fields made significant contributions on the ground, adding 59 yards and two touchdowns. A pivotal moment came late in the second quarter when Fields scored on a 3-yard touchdown run on fourth down, putting the Steelers ahead 12-7. This play allowed the Steelers coaching staff to reshape the second half game-plan differently. Rather than another field goal and a two point lead, this gave them a bigger cushion at the break.

The passing game wasn’t as prolific, with Fields completing 14 of 24 passes for 145 yards; but it was effective enough to keep the Raiders’ defense honest. The balanced attack ensured that the Steelers could move the ball consistently and capitalize on scoring opportunities. The offensive resurgence was not just about individual performances but also about timely plays and capitalizing on opportunities. A blocked punt in the third quarter set up a field goal, and a roughing-the-passer penalty led to another touchdown, extending the Steelers’ lead to 22-7.

Too Many Holding Penalties

Despite the overall success, the Steelers’ offense was hampered by penalties, particularly holding calls. These infractions consistently put the team behind the chains, making it difficult to sustain drives. Maxx Crosby was constantly beating guys off the line, leading to these costly penalties that derailed any offensive momentum.

Good thing the run game showed some sustained success, totaling 183 yards and three touchdowns while averaging over five yards per carry. But even then so, there were a couple of good runs called back. If the Steelers want to build on this performance, they’ll need to address the penalty issues and continue to refine their offensive strategy. This is favorable any time they play with a lead.

Defensive Dominance

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense showcased a remarkable performance, returning to their early-season form after allowing 803 yards in losses over the past two weeks. The Steelers’ defense held the Raiders to just 275 yards. T.J. Watt, played the role of Superman once again. Another day in the office where he was forcing turnovers. Watt executed two perfectly timed “Peanut Punches,” causing fumbles that significantly shifted the momentum in Pittsburgh’s favor. In the first half, Watt’s initial forced fumble came against Raiders rookie running back Dylan Laube on his first career NFL carry. This turnover gave the Steelers excellent field position, starting their drive at the Las Vegas 30-yard line. The offense capitalized on this opportunity, scoring a touchdown six plays later.

Watt’s disruptive play continued into the fourth quarter when he forced another fumble in the red zone. This time, the ball was recovered by safety DeShon Elliott, further frustrating the Raiders’ offensive efforts. Watt’s ability to impact the game extended beyond his pass-rushing skills, was on full display as he didn’t register a sack. The Steelers’ defense excelled in creating turnovers and making crucial stops, particularly in the red zone. Their effectiveness in this area was evident in their league-leading red zone defense statistics. Before Sunday’s matchup they allowed a mere 33.3% conversion rate in the red zone, ranking third-best in the NFL behind only the Saints and Chargers.

Two Home Games Before the Bye Week

The team is set to return to Acrisure Stadium (still gross) for two consecutive home games before their bye week. This stretch presents an opportunity for the team to build on another winning performance. The Steelers will get to host the two New York teams, the Jets and the Giants, on primetime before the break.

This stretch of games provides the opportunity to put themselves in a good spot before their bye week. Their balanced offensive attack, stifling defense, and game-changing special teams plays will need to continue to do such. Although winning feels good, these next two games are against two teams desperate to figure their winning ways.  They may be winnable but there are no easy ones in the NFL. With renewed energy and a solid game plan, the Steelers are poised to continue their game plan that has produced grind it out wins.
