The Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2025 mini camp has wrapped up, leaving fans with a mix of excitement and uncertainty as the team heads toward training camp. The signing of four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers on a one-year, $13.65 million deal appears to have finally answered the burning question of who will lead the offense as the team’s starting quarterback in 2025, bringing a spark of hope for a playoff push.
However, the absence of star linebacker T.J. Watt, who skipped mandatory mini camp amid ongoing contract negotiations, has shifted the spotlight to a brewing dispute that could define the team’s offseason. As the Steelers’ defensive cornerstone and a fan favorite, Watt’s holdout has Pittsburgh buzzing, with all eyes now on whether the team can secure a new deal for the 2021 NFL Defensive Player of the Year before training camp kicks off in late July.
It’s Aaron Rodgers’ Job
Pittsburgh’s quarterback situation was confirmed, real fast. Aaron Rodgers walked into minicamp knowing exactly what his job was – no competition, no drama, in the depth chart department. The 41-year-old veteran signed his one-year deal after the Steelers struck out elsewhere, and honestly, that’s probably the best thing that could have happened to this team.
Everyone knows Rodgers is the starter, and that clarity benefits everyone in that room. But here’s the kicker: according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Rodgers was actually Pittsburgh’s third choice. They went after Matthew Stafford first, then tried to bring back Justin Fields.
When those moves didn’t work out, the Steelers pivoted to Rodgers. Now, the four-time NFL MVP brings serious experience, but we can’t ignore the numbers. His QBR ranked 25th last season at 48.0, which is better than his career-low 41.3 in 2022, but still not great. Will Howard gets a Super Bowl veteran presence with Rodgers’ arrival. The veteran quarterback didn’t waste time stepping into that mentor role. States how he is committed to being “with him every single day”. Words that probably strike Packers fans nerves from the past.

The T.J. Watt Contract Dilemma
T.J. Watt’s empty locker told the whole story at minicamp. Watt sits in the final year of his four-year, $112 million contract he signed back in 2021. That deal made him the highest-paid defensive player at the time, but the market has shifted dramatically since then. He wants to get paid like the elite pass rusher he is, and honestly, he deserves it. You can see the records when he is in or out of the lineup.
The financial cost of his absence? Nearly $105,000 in potential fines for skipping mandatory minicamp. This represents a major shift from his 2021 strategy, when he did a “hold in” during negotiations. This time, Watt’s sending a stronger message. Mike Tomlin keeps his optimism intact, as usual. “We’ve expressed the desire to get the business done, he has as well, and so we’ll continue to work”. Both sides want this resolved before the season starts, but these contract situations can drag on longer than anyone expects.
Nick Herbig’s Extra Reps
Here’s where things get interesting for the defense. Third-year linebacker Nick Herbig suddenly finds himself running with the first-team unit. This isn’t just about getting extra reps – it’s about accelerating his development at the perfect time.
Herbig’s torn between excitement and loyalty. “I’d love T.J. to be here, that’s my guy,” Herbig admitted. “But any chance I get to run with the ones, that’s an awesome feeling”. The kid gets it – you take advantage of every opportunity in this league. Alex Highsmith sees something familiar in Herbig’s approach. “The way he rushes, you see a lot of T.J. in him”. That’s high praise considering Herbig collected 5.5 sacks last season with limited playing time. The potential is clearly there.
Jack Sawyer’s Unexpected Opportunity
The biggest surprise? Rookie Jack Sawyer getting first-team reps. Fourth-round picks from Ohio State don’t usually jump into starting roles this quickly, but Watt’s absence created this opening. These aren’t just throwaway practice reps for Sawyer. Working alongside veterans like Cameron Heyward and Minkah Fitzpatrick provides invaluable experience that’ll pay dividends down the road. These opportunities matter more for his development than they would for an established star like Watt.
The depth Pittsburgh is building at edge rusher looks impressive. Watt, Highsmith, Herbig, and now Sawyer – that’s a rotation most teams would envy. Sometimes contract disputes create unexpected benefits, and this might be one of those situations.
Rookie Derrick Harmon Just Became an Instant Starter
Steelers fans will find out early how important it was to pick a defensive lineman in the 1st round of the 2025 draft. Defensive line coach Karl Dunbar shared the news at minicamp stating the rookie Derrick Harmon’s “our left starting defensive end. You can write that.”
The Steelers’ first-round pick earned first-team reps immediately during mandatory minicamp. Not bad for a kid who’s filling the shoes left by Larry Ogunjobi’s departure. Twenty-first overall in the draft, and now he’s lining up next to Cam Heyward and Keeanu Benton as the starting defensive line. This makes it back-to-back years where Pittsburgh’s first-round pick jumps straight into a starting role. The kid’s college numbers tell you everything you need to know about why they’re so confident. At Oregon in 2024, he put up 45 tackles, 11 for loss, and 5 sacks. Even more impressive? He led all FBS interior defenders with 55 quarterback pressures.
The Competition Behind Him
Pittsburgh’s defensive line room is absolutely packed right now. You’ve got Heyward, Benton, Daniel Ekuale, and a bunch of other guys all fighting for roster spots. Fifth-round rookie Yahya Black slides in behind Benton at nose tackle after Montravius Adams got released.
Dean Lowry, DeMarvin Leal, and Isaiah Loudermilk are all battling for backup positions. Ekuale looks like he’s got a roster spot locked up alongside the three starters. The smart money says Harmon will rotate behind Heyward and Benton in sub-packages initially. Remember, they were careful with Heyward’s snap count last season, which creates plenty of opportunities for the rotation.

Troy Fautanu’s Comeback
If you are a fan of good offensive line play, this is a position of interest. Troy Fautanu is back on the field at minicamp. The 2024 first-round pick who basically watched his rookie year disappear because of a brutal knee injury. Fautanu dislocated his kneecap and tore his MCL in practice last September, days after his first NFL start in Week 2 against Denver.
Fautanu’s return basically gives Pittsburgh an extra first-round pick for 2025. Last season’s offensive line depth was concerning, to put it nicely. Now they’ve got real talent coming back.
The projected starting five looks solid: Fautanu and Jones as bookends, Zach Frazier holding it down at center, with Isaac Seumalo and Mason McCormick at guard. Depth remains a concern behind these starters, though. Calvin Anderson and Dylan Cook are your primary backup tackles, but neither guy screams long-term starter material.
Broderick Jones Gets His Wish
Jones slides back to left tackle – his college position. Last season’s swing tackle experiment didn’t work. So this offseason, Jones focused exclusively on left-tackle technique. He even dropped approximately 20 pounds, going from 325-330 down to 305-310. These two former first-round picks represent Pittsburgh’s future. Fautanu’s hungry to prove himself after missing almost an entire season. Sometimes the best players are the ones with something to prove.
Heading To Training Camp
Minicamp is just minicamp, but it is the last fans will hear about where this Steelers team is headed before training camp begins. Aaron Rodgers might have been the third choice, but his arrival has at least answered the QB question. Now, all eyes are T.J. Watt’s contract situation. Hoping it gets done sooner than later as Steelers fans have been spending some of their time as Twitter GMs. It’s business, and both sides know it. The real winners here are Nick Herbig, who’s getting reps and Jack Sawyer’s emergence as a rookie getting first-team snaps.
These position battles we’re seeing now will only heat up when the pads come on. Arthur Smith has some new personnel to work with between Rodgers’ arm and emerging talents. The defense looks loaded with young guys stepping up alongside established veterans. The offense has that veteran presence they’ve been missing. This isn’t just about growing pains anymore – this team has been weirdly put together nicely. Training camp will sort out the details, but the something new is on the horizon. The combination of hungry rookies and proven veterans and Aaron Rodgers will at least make the 2025 season entertaining. For better or for worse.
