A few weeks ago, I wrote about how The Book of Boba Fett, was the launching off point for Star Wars in 2022. The finale of the Disney+ original series premiered this past Wednesday, and I finished it feeling conflicted. The show get’s off to a really poor start; the pilot episode was pretty good, but the ensuing three episodes all feel copy and paste: Boba tries to gain allies, flashbacks of Boba with Tusken Raiders.
The final three episodes are strong, but unfortunately (outside of the finale) Boba is not a part of them, and it definitely feels like the appearance of Luke, Mando, Grogu and Ahsoka were there to save the series. Episode six was truly elite, I don’t think there is any doubt about that, but the strongest episodes (five and six) are the ones that revolve around The Mandalorian, not Boba Fett. We do finally get to see Boba show out in the finale, but of course it has to be in an hour long run and gun fight scene in Mos Eisley. I’m not particularly fond of Disney ending all of their shows with a big fight, but they do it in everything; not even just Star Wars properties, but with Marvel too.
I think it is clear that Disney, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni had a plan, which was to make a spin-off show about Boba and give a much beloved character some extra screen time. BUT, more importantly: incorporate The Mandalorian and Grogu subplot to wrap up loose ends from The Mandalorian season two, pump some nostalgia straight into your veins with Luke and Ahsoka speaking (this was awesome, by the way. Like a truly iconic moment in the Star Wars mythos. I wish they talked more), and go full speed into season three of The Mandalorian.
I personally always thought Boba Fett was cool because he was so mysterious, his actions spoke louder than his words (he didn’t really speak at all, which was also cool). But this show made him feel old, even though he really isn’t supposed to be that old. Speaking of cool, my boy Cad Bane made an appearance in this show. What the hell was that about? Such a totally bizarre character to bring into this era of Star Wars. This is post-empire, Bane was a bounty hunter during The Clone Wars! Talk about a fish out of water. Unfortunately, that felt like another nostalgia grab, and it did not hit the same as Luke and Ahsoka because Cad Bane is like 70 years old at this point, they should’ve left that character alone. But not only did they horseshoe Cad Bane into the story, THEY KILLED HIM, THEY STRAIGHT UP KILLED HIM FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER. We’re supposed to believe that this was a meaningful victory to Boba because they had a couple of lines of dialogue, and Bane casually mentions he has beaten him out of jobs before, but none of that matters. They brought in a super cool Clone Wars character just to kill him, and it cannot be forgiven.
Was this series absolutely necessary? No, not even a little. The most important parts of this show could have been done in one episode of The Mandalorian season three. Overall, I’d give The Book of Boba Fett a 5.5/10. It wasn’t horrible, it had cool and nostalgic moments, but in the end it just didn’t feel necessary.
The next entry to Star Wars will be the Obi-Wan series, which has been given a premiere date of May 25, the 45th anniversary of A New Hope.

You know what stinks about this? It’s another series that takes place on Tatooine. Tatooine is iconic, for many reasons, but damn, give me a colorful planet with new stuff please! I am getting sick of looking at the same sand, I HATE SAND.
All jokes aside, I am super excited for this series. My only wish is that the rumors of an Obi-Wan and Vader rematch are not true. I hope it’s like a dream sequence or a force vision or something akin to that, because chronologically, you really have to stretch the dialogue between these two in A New Hope for it to make any sense.
Obi-Wan is going to be a 10/10, but to be fair, it could be him mumbling to himself in a hut for six hours and I would think it was electric.
