Rowdy and golf aren’t usually two words that are associated with each other very often, but one tournament each year prides itself on being different than the rest. The Waste Management Phoenix Open, hosted in Phoenix, Arizona, is home to one of the most unique holes on tour. At only 163 yards, the 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale isn’t famous for its challenging nature, such as Amen Corner at Augusta, or being surrounded by inevitable danger like the island green 17 at TPC Sawgrass. No, the 16th at Scottsdale sits within a full stadium where the biggest party in golf takes place.
While it hasn’t always had the stadium seats, this hole has always been surrounded by patrons watching on, and unlike usual holes, all are encouraged to make noise. Filled with college students from Arizona and Arizona State, this hole has turned into a full on darty, where players embrace the craziness that has led to some of the best shots in golf. None more exciting than an ace by the GOAT himself.
This unique venue is a nice change up from the usual muted nature of the sport, especially in non major events. If you have nothing going on this weekend before the Super Bowl, I highly recommend turning on this tournament and watching this once a year spectacle that even non-golf fans can enjoy. It might just be what you need to get you into the game of golf.
