Steelers Training Camp

Steelers Training Camp 2024: What to Know

The Pittsburgh Steelers are full steam ahead during their Training Camp at Saint Vincent College. This year’s camp has an extra layer of intrigue, with the quarterback competition between Russell Wilson, who is nursing a calf injury, and Justin Fields taking those early reps.

The training camp has an impact on shaping the Steelers depth chart and offers a glimpse into the team’s strategy for the upcoming season. From the fierce battle among wide receivers to the dynamic duo of Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren in the backfield, every position group is under scrutiny. The defense is drawing excitement, with new additions like Patrick Queen and Donte Jackson looking to provide value. As the team adapts to changes in the coaching staff, including a new offensive coordinator, the Steelers Training Camp serves as a crucible to forge the team’s identity for 2024.

Quarterback Situation: Wilson vs Fields

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ training camp has taken an unexpected turn, with Russell Wilson sidelined due to a minor calf injury suffered during the conditioning test. This setback has created an opportunity for Justin Fields to showcase his skills with the first-team offense, adding intrigue to the quarterback situation.

Despite his absence from the field, Russell Wilson’s impact on the team remains evident. His leadership and experience have already made an impression on his teammates. Many of his teammates on the offense were in middle school or high school when he was making Super Bowl runs. Wilson’s adaptability is also on display as he navigates this minor setback; he reassured fans and media, saying, “If there was a game, I’m definitely going. No doubt”.

Fields’ Development

Justin Fields has seized the opportunity to work with the first-team offense during Wilson’s absence. His performance has been a mixed bag, showcasing both his potential and areas for improvement. Fields has demonstrated his arm talent with impressive deep passes, but consistency remains a challenge.

One notable aspect of Fields’ performance has been his ball security. Reports indicate that he hasn’t thrown a single interception during the early days of camp, showing good decision-making and protecting the football. This is a positive sign for a quarterback who has struggled with turnovers in the past.

Coach Tomlin’s Approach

Head Coach Mike Tomlin has maintained a measured approach to the quarterback situation. When asked about Wilson’s status, Tomlin reiterated his “pole position” stance, indicating that Wilson remains the frontrunner for the starting job. However, Tomlin has also emphasized the value of competition and the opportunity it presents for both quarterbacks.

Tomlin’s philosophy is evident in his statement: “One man’s misfortune is another man’s opportunity” . This approach allows Fields to gain valuable first-team reps while keeping the competition open. Tomlin has been careful not to commit to a definitive starter, stating, “Nothing has changed” when asked about Wilson’s advantage.

Wide Receiver Position

Entering his third season, George Pickens has established himself as a formidable presence on the field. In 2023, he showcased his talent by catching 63 passes for 1,140 yards and five touchdowns. Pickens’ growth as a leader is required, but it’s not a secret he’s the offense’s most talented player.

The battle for the WR2 position has intensified, with several players vying for the role. Calvin Austin III, entering his third season with the Steelers, has emerged as a strong contender. Austin’s familiarity with the team and his speed make him a valuable asset in the new offensive scheme under Arthur Smith. Roman Wilson, the Steelers’ third-round pick in this year’s draft, was showing his skillset early on but has suffered a setback. With an apparent injury and not knowing many details, this is a stunt in early development.

Running Back Duo

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a crucial decision to make regarding Najee Harris’s future with the team. In May, the Steelers declined Harris’s fifth-year option, which would have cost $6.79 million fully guaranteed for the 2025 season.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his contract, Harris has expressed interest in staying with the Steelers long-term. However, he says he understands the business side of the game, and acknowledged that there have been no serious discussions about a new deal.

Jaylen Warren’s Impressive Start

Jaylen Warren has shown his explosiveness early. Which is great considering he’s pushing for the full time starting job. His improved conditioning has been particularly noteworthy, with Warren focusing more on running than lifting during the offseason. This dedication has paid off, as Warren feels he can “run all day” and maintain his focus without fatigue.

The Steelers find themselves with a unique running back duo. In 2023, both Harris and Warren eclipsed 1,000 yards from scrimmage, joining Detroit’s David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs as the only RB duos in the league to accomplish such a feat. Last season, Harris rushed for 1,035 yards and eight touchdowns, while Warren carried the ball 149 times for 784 yards and four touchdowns. Warren’s efficiency was particularly impressive, averaging 5.3 yards per carry compared to Harris’s 4.1.

As the Steelers adapt to Arthur Smith’s new offense, the distribution of work between Harris and Warren remains a key question. Based on Warren’s performance in camp and his past production, it’s likely he sees an increased workload from last year.

Defensive Backs Making Waves

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ secondary has become a focal point during the 2024 training camp, with several players making significant impressions. The defensive backfield has shown promise, combining veteran experience with emerging talent. Donte Jackson, acquired in a trade with the Carolina Panthers, has quickly established himself as a key player in the Steelers’ defense.

Safety DeShon Elliott brings a wealth of experience and versatility to the Steelers’ secondary. After stints with the Baltimore Ravens, Detroit Lions, and Miami Dolphins, Elliott has proven to be a dependable and adaptable player. Elliott’s skill set allows him to excel in various roles, including playing in the box, where his physicality and violent hitting ability shine. This versatility is should complement star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, potentially allowing Fitzpatrick to return to his playmaking, roaming style of play.

Undrafted Beanie Bishop

Omar Khan and Mike Tomlin have a knack for finding diamonds in the rough; undrafted free agent Beanie Bishop has been earning first-team reps at practice. His ability to lock down receivers Calvin Austin and Roman Wilson has not gone unnoticed. The Steelers’ defensive backs are under the microscope, with Joey Porter Jr. the only one locked into a starting corner spot. As the team continues to shape its identity for the 2024 season, the secondary needs to find its strengths in sub packages.

Linebacker Transformation

Linebacker is a position group the Steelers have not gotten right in some time. The Patrick Queen signing was a huge step in filling that hole. The competition for the other starting linebacker spots is interesting. Elandon Roberts, who was fun to watch at times last season, is seen as a strong contender for a starting role. Known primarily as a run-stuffer, Roberts showed versatility last season when his role only increased due to injuries.

Cole Holcomb, who signed a three-year, $18 million contract with the Steelers last year, is another potential starter. However, his availability for the start of the 2024 season is questionable due to a season ending knee injury suffered in November 2023.

The Steelers have also added exciting young talent to the mix: Payton Wilson, their third-round pick from NC State, brings intriguing potential. He won both the Butkus and Bednarik awards in college, and showcased his exceptional athleticism at the NFL combine by running the fastest 40-yard dash time among non-wide receivers and defensive backs. The competition extends to special teams contributors as well. Mark Robinson, a converted college running back, has developed into a core special teams player. The Steelers have also brought back Tyler Matakevich, a former seventh-round pick who spent four seasons with the Buffalo Bills.

Onto the Preseason

The Steelers’ 2024 training camp has proven to be a hotbed of competition and growth across all positions. From the quarterback battle between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, to the emergence of standout defensive backs and wide receivers, the team is shaping up to compete hard. The intense competition in camp is likely to result in a stronger, more cohesive team ready to take on the challenges of the 2024 NFL season. With a blend of veteran experience and fresh talent, the Steelers are puzzling the pieces of a roster overhaul.
